Western Front Way - Via Sacra

The Western Front Way - Via Sacra is a new long-distance walking and cycling route for peace, mental well-being and memory. The idea was rediscovered in a letter written by a young soldier who served at the Battle of Loos in 1915 - pictured above. He wrote to his family and principal at home that after the Great War ended, he dreamed of creating a "beautiful way ... for all nations to walk together in peace once the conflict was over.

The route follows the World War I frontline from Nieuwpoort to Pfetterhouse on the French-Swiss border. The first 70 km of the route runs on Flemish soil and connects Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide and Ypres.
